Finding DAB Digital Radio in the United States Can be a Tough Proposition

The United States got the short end of the stick with the digital radio revolution. Other parts of the world, especially Europe, were able to seamlessly shift their analogue radio broadcasts to digital with digital audio broadcasting (DAB) digital radio in a format called Eureka 147. This format was standardized all over the world except for the United States, which opted for their DAB digital radio broadcasts to be formatted in HD Radio, a format no other country uses and has not really caught anyone’s attention even in the United States. Instead, the US decided to focus on satellite radio, a costly system where subscribers have to buy pricey equipment and pay a monthly subscription fee. Conversely, Eureka 147 and Hybrid-Digital (HD) Radio are essentially free to the listener.

In 2001, the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to adopt DAB digital radio on a large scale. Over fifty private radio stations and all of the British Broadcasting Corporation stations underwent the shift from analog to an analog/digital hybrid. By using the digital format to transmit songs, radio receivers can now also pick up the names of the artist and song playing if you are listening to a music station. With DAB digital radio, even those who like the news or the weather benefit from the digital format. For example, when a traffic broadcast or weather forecast comes over the airwaves the radio receiver will display any relevant information about that specific information. Such textual transmission is commonly referred to as “radiotext”.

Although the DAB digital radio design in the United States is focused around HD Radio, there are currently three entities who are trying to secure rights to broadcasting. Recently, all three: Digital Radio Express, Lucent Technologies, and USA Digital Radio formed into one group called iBiquity in order to focus on offering HD Radio to the masses. Their plans are to release a digital radio standard like the Europeans that offers a hybrid digital/analog broadcast.
