For People on the Move, a Portable Digital Radio Receiver is the Way to Go

Although satellite radio has been in existence for quite a few years now, the major broadcasting companies have been rather slow in developing a system for their subscribers to enjoy the benefits of satellite radio from anywhere in North America. However, with more and more people subscribing to the pay for services, there has been a marked increase in different portable digital radio receivers for people to choose from. Whether you listen to XM Satellite Radio or Sirius Satellite Radio, there is a portable receiver that can fit your lifestyle.

The most popular satellite radio station, XM, also offers the most variety for customers looking for portable digital radio solutions. In 2004, XM Satellite Radio launched a new portable radio system called XM2go. This system yielded three different portable radio receivers for its satellite broadcast: the Delphi MyFi, the Pioneer AirWare, and the Giant International Tao. Unfortunately a drawback of hiring several secondary companies to design portable digital radio receivers was that there was no standardization between any of the receivers to aid people looking for add-on parts. The Delphi MyFi was the first released and remains the most popular to this day. Delphi’s product retails for around $250 while the AirWare and the Tao retail for much less. You can purchase a myriad of different products for each receiver, including charging stations, remote controls, amplifiers and speaker sets. However, since there is no standardization between the designs, each add-on is not interchangeable between receivers.

Sirius Satellite Radio approached portable digital receiver design from a totally different perspective. Sirius opted to design a variety of receiver/antenna combinations which can be put into any of their different add-on products. The same receiver can technically be placed into the car, a home stereo or even carried around like an iPod. By standardizing the receivers, Sirius customers are able to purchase any add-ons they wish and not have to worry about them fitting the required portable digital radio receiver.
