Possession of a Digital Radio Scanner Could Mean Time in Jail

Radio scanners have been a staple among people of all different types. Whether you are an amateur radio user, a reporter or a criminal, there is a radio scanner on the market for you. For those who do not participate in this timeless hobby, scanners are classified as radio receivers that can scan several of hundreds of different radio frequencies. People with ill intentions have historically used radio scanners to listen in to what people are saying over a certain frequency. This has wrecked havoc with law enforcement and other public service agencies as well as corporations who try and operate in a discreet manor. In response to the commonality of different radio scanners, many of these organizations have switched to digital frequencies in an attempt to keep their secrets secret. However, with more and more technology, it is now possible to purchase a digital radio scanner which anyone can use to scan the digital frequencies.

A general digital radio scanner will essentially break into the APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officials) Project 25 (P25) spectrum of digital communication frequencies. These are frequencies designed by law enforcement agencies to be used during emergencies or when transmitting information they do not want people to get a hold of. Unfortunately for them, purchasing a brand new digital radio scanner will allow even the most novice of users to listen in on conversations over the digital radio waves.

With the passage of new laws, the United States is slowly beginning to crack down on the new digital radio scanner technology. According to some experts, owning or even attempting to purchase a digital radio scanner which has the ability to decrypt the APCO Project 25 digital broadcasts is totally illegal and could wind you up in jail or with some serious fines. Furthermore, in certain states, it is illegal to be in possession of a regular radio scanner or digital radio scanner if you are a suspect of a crime.
